about

The Norris brothers and I met in 1978 at Ipswich Jr High. We had our first jam together in the art class room there one day after school had ended. I had a huge crush on the art teacher so it was probably one of the greatest afternoons of my life up to that point. We played some cover songs and some of my originals. The brothers Norris had zero problem with punk rock and I introduced them to my record collection. I wish I had a recording of us doing the covers set. We even played "I'm In Love With Your Mom" by the legendary Vom. We were young (John-13, Mark-14 and me-15) and still learning how to play but there are strands of what came later in bands like the Targets and Bullet LaVolta (Get it Together/Dead Wrong). Along the way we met Pat Leonard, who wanted to build some lighting rigs and do lights for band at our next gig. The night before the show on January 11th, 1980 there was a horrific fire and John and Mark perished along with their father in their home. A few days after the funeral Mrs. Norris took me to a music store in Boston to replace my guitar and amp that were lost in the fire but I didn't bother with them until the Spring when Pat Leonard called me to ask how I was doing and if I would teach him to play bass. That was the beginning of our musical journey to the Moving Targets. After a good amount of discussion, we decided to keep Iron Cross going with our friend Pete Gordon on drums. We ended up with a mix of new originals ( enough for a full record) and cover songs. We had a reggae song called Light Up A Spliff that half the kids in Ipswich High knew the words to (I might be exaggerating a bit). I can't seem to find any old recordings from that era of the band but Pete Gordon and I recorded a few old tunes for posterity in 2010 that you can find on More Lost Songs.

Schools a drag that's a fact
You're sayin' to yourself that you'll never go back
And then they come to get you
For skippin' a class
I can't take much more
I'm gonna get out at last
I'm in a school daze
Got me livin' by a group thread
It's got me crazy
And it's going to my head
Your momma and your poppa
Think you're down' alright
But in school it's Hell on a one way flight
They'll hassle you and mess with you
To see what's wrong
But they can't break me
'Cos I'm much too strong
